Paper industry (semi-chemical pulp), reducing agent (dyes), water treatment (antioxidant), as an oxygen scavenger in boiler feed waters, photographic developer for fixing prints, film preservative and stain preventative during developing, food preservative (particularly for processed meats, fruit juices, egg yolks, etc.) and antioxidant, textiles and paper: as an antichlor following bleaching by sodium hypochlorite (wool, straw, silk), generating SO2, silvering glass, source of sulfite ion, antioxidant and enzyme inhibitor for fruits and vegetables.
