WHAT’S NEW

Copper and Zinc continue to trade in a narrow range waiting for some economic news to move them lower or higher. There are reports that the Chinese economy is slowing, and China is a major influence on the metal markets. Add in the uncertainty on tariffs and we have this narrow trading range. Typically, we see prices rise first quarter as manufacturing picks up, but this isn’t a normal year, so we will have to wait for more information. Most of the negative news is priced into the metals. As an example, today’s copper metal price is 15% lower than the start of 2018.

January pricing will address where the tariffs will be to start the year. The Chinese products at 10% are targeted to go to 25%, but there has been some commentary that if trade negotiations make progress that there wouldn’t be additional tariffs. A lot depends on what happens at the G20 summit in Buenos Aries November 30th.  This is the last planned face to face between President Trump and President Xi.  The problem has become a drag on both economies and hopefully an agreement can be reached.  Whatever happens will set the stage for shipping space, routes and costs across the world.

We have seen very tight vessel space from China with goods trying to reach US soil before the end of the year.  Other routes not normally volatile are seeing new volatility as US importers search for non-Chinese options.  We are finding some good options for some products while we wait to see what happens. Fortunately for Chem One and our customers most of our products don’t originate in China.

We will be stocking a new origin Manganese Sulfate powder. This is a 32% manganese level and will be a significantly lower cost than the other source we carry while maintaining our quality standards. Call for details.

Chem One will be closed December 24th and 25th and January 1st, 2019. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all Happy Holidays and thank you for your continued business.

REGULATORY NEWS

OSHA released its “Top 10 Citied Violations” for fiscal year 2018 and it will come as no surprise that Hazard Communication ranked number 2 again as it has for the last several years.  It of course relates directly to the 2012 Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Communication (GHS).

1. Fall Protection 29 CFR 1926.501
2. Hazard Communication 29 CFR 1910.1200
3. Scaffolding – General Requirements 29 CFR 1926.451
4. Respiratory Protection 29 CFR 1910.134
5. Control of Hazardous Energy – Lockout/Tagout 29 CFR 1910.147
6. Ladders 29 CFR 1926.1053
7. Powered Industrial Trucks 29 CFR 1910.178
8. Fall Protection – Training Requirements 29 CFR 1926.503
9. Machine Guarding– General Requirement 29 CFR 1910.212
10. Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment – Eye and Face Protection 29 GHS 1926.102

What this tells us is that there are still obviously multiple ways in which employers are failing to adequately follow or in some cases understand the standard.  And what is even more reason to be concerned is that in 2019 there will be amendments to the standard to move it toward the latest global revision.

We can only hope that these changes include clarifications to assist with misunderstandings and inconsistencies, and perhaps the global alignment will also assist with the differences we are seeing as other countries come on board and begin labelling their chemicals to a more recent edition of GHS.
